Lupita

I got surprised on my birthday with a meal out! I literally had no idea I just got swooped off when I thought we were about to get on a train and go home, I got a couple ahhhs when I told people about that.

So I love Mexicans, I am always on the look out for new ones as I have yet to find that perfect, perhaps non-existent, Mexican and knowing that, after doing some research on the area I work, I got taken to the best of the bunch; Lupitas. It. Was. Incredible. I loved it sooo much there were loads of choices, it was quick and unlike so many other Mexicans as it was fresh and not ladled with cheese, tomato sauce and oil. The kitchen is right in the middle of the restaurant and you can sit and eat on the bar around it and watch them work which we though was very cool but were still happy with our window seat. It got busy really quickly and there were a couple of families with young kids which I though was interesting, I can’t tell if it’s a good thing or what it says about Lupitas as they didn’t have a kids menu. We got a starter, main and dessert and came away comfortably filled instead of wanting to roll home which again was lovely. The only thing I would say is that sometimes they go a little weak on the spice and flavour and just rely on the natural flavour of things which could be a good or bad thing depending of what kind of Mexican you feel like.

For our starter we got totopos lupita with steak, refried beans, guacamole and a chunky fresh salsa, the only way I like it so I was very happy. It came with what looked like homemade crisps to dip in and was very tasty, although we went back to it after our mains and it didn’t taste as good, I think our mains were too flavourful to go back! For the mains I got soft tacos with pork chicharron, chorizo and steak all with a little bit of cheese, some crunchy bits, guacamole and veg. I loved it! I immediately wanted to look up the recipe because I thought it was fantastic! I would have it again in a heartbeat also it didn’t look too big when it came out but it did fill me up I was very surprised. My boyfriend got the steak burrito which was lovely and 'tomato-ey' and very creamy, I missed the black or pinto beans but he said it was very tasty. The extra of chipotle mayonnaise was a little disappointing it was very weak and wasn’t like smoky chipotle at all. So after all that we still had a little room for dessert (duh!) I went with the classic churros with chocolate they came sprinkled with cinnamon sugar which added a lovely dimension and the churros where crispy on the outside and a little chewy in the middle, delicious. The other choice was chocolate cake which was gluten free and like a rich torte with a big squiggle of chocolate sauce on top it was also delicious but I think I made the best choice! Oh and I got fresh lemonade and he only got coke so I definitely picked the best out of our meals.

One note I will make do NOT get the salsa guajillo it is not tasty, if you do want to try it ask for it on the side and let me know what you think!

Tesco Daffodils

I bought my first ever bunch of daffodils last weekend and they are spectacular! I love how much they brighten up my bedroom. They bloomed in one day as having never picked a bunch of daffodils before I went for one that already had flowers poking out as I thought that would give me  the best chance to get some blooming. They are still going strong and they were only a pound! I got mine from Tescos and if you have a pound spare I would highly recommend this as a way to spend it, pictures below!

I wore my peach COS jumper and underneath a white top from Zara that I bought in Barcelona when I went with friends years ago. My blue Asos high waisted jeans (I’m getting sick of writing this now). My Topshop black boots.

For hair and make-up I left my hair loose as I had just washed it, wore lipstick by Rimmel from Kate Moss’s collection and the usual mascara.

What I Wore … 18th March 2014

I had on an M&S monochrome top, similar one at Topshop, with a basic black Asos top underneath. My Asos high waisted blue jeans. My black Topshop boots. A black cardigan from M&S. A statement silver chain necklace which was a present and I haven’t discovered where it was from yet but I’m on the case!

For hair and make-up I used batiste dry shampoo and a tangle teeser to brush out my hair, Topshop Show off lipstick which might be called something else now as I can’t find it but I like this macaroon one too, gel eyeliner and mascara.

Excuse the red spot in between my eyebrows! I had no concealer on me which is probably for the best as I think they disappear quicker when you don't cover them up with stuff.

Birthday Desk

Today is my Birthday!!! It is also St. Patricks day so I hope you all have a lovely St. Patricks day today! I am 25, eek! It started pretty well with a sunny morning, my birthday cake offering was looking good and made it to the office in one piece (see birthday cake post, it should be nearby!) and then it went a little rocky, the lady in charge of birthdays in our office had been told the wrong date for my birthday, they thought they had till June! They did, however, pull it together spectacularly and when I popped out to get lunch I came back to a beautifully decorated birthday desk which made me very happy. I got flowers, a card, celebrations and some sequins! Made turning 25 just a little bit easier. They flowers were so photogenic I may have got a little snap happy so sorry bout that! Pictures below!!!

Hope you had a lovely Monday!

Birthday Cake

So I ran through a couple birthday dessert ideas I really wanted to do cookie dough cupcakes with swirls of vanilla and chocolate buttercream and lots of sprinkles but logistics stopped me and I moved on to cakes instead. I have a tried a tested crowd pleaser which is lemon drizzle it is so easy to make and so tasty but I wanted to do something a little more impressive looks-wise.

Then I saw, on the i am baker blog, a green ombre cake and it got me thinking I had red gel dye, I had some cherry jam and I had everything else I needed for a Victoria sponge.

I loosely followed this bbc recipe for the sponge because I have the memory of a goldfish and completely forgot my scales weren't working so I had to use the cup trick again. Then once I had made the cake batter I followed i am baker and separated the batter into three bowls and a cake tin as I wanted one plain. I added less and less food dye to the three bowls and mixed the colour through and baked all the cakes, I even put in the extra effort and cut out some greaseproof paper for the bottoms of the tins!

Once baked I let them cool and made my butter icing using the same 1:2 butter to icing sugar recipe, this time 200g butter so 400g icing sugar. Once this was done and the cakes were definitely cool I started layering. First butter icing then cherry jam then a sprinkle of desiccated coconut and repeat! I tried to do thin layers as I was doing four of them and didn't want anything to overpower but I think I should have used a bit more jam. Once stacked I covered the whole thing in the rest of the butter icing and added the sprinkles on top and ta-da my birthday cake! Pictures below.
